REPORT FROM BELGIAN EMBASSY

REPORT OF FOODEX JAPAN 2008

The largest International Food and Beverage Fair, "FOODEX JAPAN 2008" was held from March 11 till March 14 at Makuhari, Chiba and a variety of Belgian foods and beverages were introduced. The fair was very successful and about 100,000 people visited the exhibition.

On March 13, Belgian Embassy hosted the reception inviting about 200 people at the hotel nearby the exhibition hall. Baron Willem Van de Voorde, Minister-Counselor of the Embassy informed in his welcome speech that the sales of Belgian foods and beverages in Japan are evolving very satisfactory and that although they represent only 7% of the total export to Japan, their contribution to the image of Belgium in Japan is enormous owing to the increasing popularity of Belgian foods into Japanese households and dining rooms.

He also said that those products tell about the values of traditional production in Belgium, according to the highest standards of hygiene and quality achieved through the constant research and development. They convey to the Japanese public a notion of sophistication and promise of good life. It in turn adds to a favorable background for potential Japanese investors.
